Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was born in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art through her aunt Denise at the age of a small child. The aunt she had was a nurse who worked shifts at night so she could spend the day to literature, art, theater and other interests. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was trained by her mother to understand that art could serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was well-informed and taught her how to make use of the arts as a means of expression. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born, and educated. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights marches that were historic through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama would inspire her later to create a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduating she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she received degrees in English as well as African American studies. While she was still an undergraduate student DuVernay began to consider producing to broadcast journalism. She started working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to watch the home of one of the jurors of the jury and go through their garbage. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she decided to move towards the publicity sector. DuVernay began her professional career working as a junior press assistant in a tiny film studio shortly after she graduated from college. She launched in 1999 her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Aside from PR, her agency also launched several social media and lifestyle networks, including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
